Welcome to our Mobile Broadband Glossary page at Compare Mobile Broadband. CDMA - This stands for Code Division Multiple Access is a form of multiplexing. Cellular systems that make use of this type of multiplexing are designated as CDMA. As well as cellular telecommunications systems, CDMA is made use of in Global Positioning Systems. EV-DO - This stands for Evolution Data Optimized, and is a telecommunications standard for wireless data transmission via radio signals. It is used by many cell phone companies that use CDMA based systems. MAC Address - A Media Access Control address is a quasi-unique identifier for a given Network Card in a computer. Note that if a particular computer two network cards, e.g. one for wired ethernet and another for wireless connection, each will have its own MAC Address. MAC Filtering - A network security technique that checks the MAC address (a unique identifying number on a device's network card) before granting access to the network. This should not be used as the sole means of securing a wireless network, where WEP or WPA encryption is also advisable, but it is a useful addition to further harden the wireless network. Multiplexing - Sending multiple streams of information on a resource-limited transmission carrier as a single complex signal and then converting back to separate signals at the receiving end. UMTS - Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, a 3G cell phone technology.
